Where is Ceiba?

Ceiba is a small town on Puerto Rico’s east coast, about 35 miles from San Juan. Known for its laid-back vibe and natural beauty, it serves as the gateway to two of Puerto Rico’s most stunning islands: Vieques and Culebra.

Fun fact: Ceiba’s flag looks very similar to Portugal’s.

Where Are the Ferry Terminal and Airport Located?

The Ceiba Ferry Terminal and the Ceiba Airport are both located inside the grounds of the former U.S. Navy Base, Roosevelt Roads.

On the map, they look close—but don’t be fooled. Walking between them is nearly impossible (unless you’re up for a 1.5-hour hike), because their entrances are in completely different spots.

By car, however, it’s only about 8 minutes, and there are usually taxis waiting at the ferry terminal. This makes it convenient if you want to mix and match transportation options, like flying into Ceiba and taking the ferry out.

How Far is the Drive from San Juan to Ceiba?

The trip from San Juan to Ceiba takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours by car, depending on traffic.

The drive follows the scenic PR-66 and PR-3 highways, winding along the island’s northeastern coast. Along the way, you’ll pass through local neighborhoods, hilly areas, and even catch views of the magnificent El Yunque Rainforest.

While you can rent a car and drive yourself, remember you can’t take it on the ferry unless you’re a resident of Vieques or Culebra. That means you’ll pay for both rental days and parking on a car you can’t actually use.

👉 For most travelers, booking a private transfer from San Juan to Ceiba is the smartest option. It’s stress-free, comfortable, and gets you right to the terminal without the hassle.

Supermarket Before Arriving to the Ferry

Just a few minutes before entering the ferry terminal area, there’s a supermarket where travelers can stock up on groceries and essentials.

This stop is highly recommended because supermarkets in Vieques and Culebra are generally smaller, less stocked, and more expensive. If you’re staying in a rental home or planning beach picnics, this is the best place to prepare before boarding.

👉 If you book one of our private transfers from San Juan to Ceiba, you also have the option to add a supermarket stop along the way (available for an extra fee). This way, you can shop comfortably before boarding without worrying about timing or logistics.

How to Buy Tickets for the Ceiba Ferry

Tickets for the ferry can be purchased in two main ways:

  1. At the ticket window – the most common option for visitors.

  2. Online at Puerto Rico Ferry – though availability is limited and tends to sell out quickly.

If you know your travel dates, buy online early. But if tickets are gone, don’t panic—there may still be options.

Approximate Ticket Prices

  • Adults (non-residents): $2 to $5 one-way

  • Residents: $2 one-way

  • Children and seniors: Discounted fares available

The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes to Vieques and 1 hour 15 minutes to Culebra.

Parking at Ceiba Ferry Terminal

The terminal has a large, secure parking lot available for travelers, at around $15 per day. The parking has a shuttle that runs all the time between and takes customers between the parking lot and the ferry terminal gate.

While convenient, remember: if you rent a car in San Juan just to park it in Ceiba, you’ll pay for both parking and unused rental days.

That’s why many travelers choose Puerto Rico private transfers—you save money, avoid stress, and skip the parking hassle.

Inside the terminal, there’s a small cafeteria offering:

  • Snacks

  • Sandwiches

  • Burgers and hotdogs

  • And of course, coffee ☕ (because no Puerto Rican journey is complete without it).

It’s not gourmet dining, but it’s perfect for a quick bite while you wait for your ferry.

Insider Tip for Last-Minute Tickets

I did not tell you this

💡 Okay, you didn’t hear this from me… If you don’t have a ticket, try waiting until just before boarding closes. Sometimes, tickets reserved for Vieques and Culebra residents go unused and are released at the last minute.

But, be warned: just because you find a ticket to Vieques or Culebra doesn’t guarantee you’ll find a ticket back. This is especially important if you’re planning a day trip and want to return to the main island the same evening.

The Best Way to Get to Ceiba Ferry Terminal

Let’s be honest—the biggest challenge isn’t the ferry itself, it’s getting to Ceiba from San Juan.
